Finally, Alternative Fuel Engines Are Gaining Respect

In order for all of us to understand what is going on in the world about the high price of gasoline. Let us look at one mans quest to make the engine a better and cheaper running machine, a quick history lesson if you will.

A lot of people think of the diesel engine with the black soot soaring upwards from large semi-trucks on the highways and byways of America. We have all smelled the odor when they idle in a parking lot. If you have ever been in the Army you can remember the deuce and half trucks and their smell.

This is how the diesel engine has developed but was this the way its inventor imaged it, as an engine running on petroleum? The diesel engine was invented by Rudolf Diesel and ran with success on its fuel of choice – PEANUT OIL !

Diesel also tried out successfully with using whale oil but neither fuel was as prevailing or as easily available as petroleum. At this time petroleum based oils were the most economically obtainable.
So the engine took the route of easy oil and you now know the rest of the story.

Rudolf Diesel had stated “The diesel engine can be fed with vegetable oils and would help considerably in the development of agriculture of the countries which use it”

And later predicted that “The use of vegetable oils for engine fuels may seem insignificant today. But such oils may become in course of time as important as petroleum and the coal tar products of the present time.”

You might be asking why hasn’t someone done something about this in the past 100 years? Well, it has come full circle and we are now doing something.

Keeping the above mentioned history in mind and looking to our future, our affiliation with the oil industries and our addiction on foreign oil, hopefully, will motivate us to explore options with a more open mind. The many experiments that have lately come alive attest to what is possible if we are willing to change in a positive direction or maybe to go back to the primary vision of Rudolph Diesel and his engine.

Here a several of new advances moving full steam ahead:

1. From fat or vegetable oil through a chemical process called transesterification comes biodiesel an alternative fuel. This process breaks apart the glycerin from the fat or vegetable oil, creating two new products, glycerin and biodiesel. The most popular source for biodiesel is soybean oil, but poultry fats can also be used.

2. Ethanol, another clean-burning fuel has sparked interest in biodiesel which is being helped by new government standards and rising gas prices. A number of ethanol projects developing from corn, soft wood and other sources also are under way.

3. Also, today May 20, 2006 in the news, there is research being done in an early 1900s red brick armory at the Kossuth County fairgrounds in Iowa. The engine can run on a number of fuels including hydrogen, ethanol, natural gas, propane or digester gas from landfills. The company is initially focusing on making more efficient, environmentally friendlier engines to replace those used in generators and in forklift trucks, airline ground equipment, irrigation pumps, tractors and buses.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 commands an increase in renewable fuel usage to 7.5 billion gallons in 2012 from 4 billion gallons in 2006. The bill also supports the alternative fuel industry with production incentives such as tax credits.

At the small side of the scale, turbines can be as tiny as 5 feet in diameter and are capable of only a few hundred watts. On the high end of the spectrum, turbines can be as huge as three hundred feet in diameter and are capable of generating two to five megawatts of power.

Similar to photovoltaic solar power generation, there might be rebates available for construction, and excess energy can be sold back to the power company.

The recreational vehicles and others known as camping cars are becoming very popular. They are going to be a great tool for anyone looking for a great adventure. There will be comfort and space for anyone looking for a great camping trip.

The inside of the recreational vehicle is going to be having a big part in your comfortable stay.

Having a recreational vehicle is going to have a bed, bathroom, smaller kitchen area, and some storage areas.

Having a luxurious recreational vehicle is going to have a living room with a table, TV, kitchen and even a microwave. You can expect a master bedroom as well with a great cozy bed.

The bathrooms are going to have a spacious shower and the toilets are going to be portable. You can detach them and clean the area any time you want.

There are going to be different terms that are involved with the inside of the recreational vehicles. The toilets are going to have a Black water tank that will hold the waster water.

With gas prices increasing and growing environmental awareness, the need to consider alternate energy and fuel sources are becoming a necessity. One alternative is the use of Biodiesel fuel, which is becoming more and more popular today.

Because Biodiesel is a cleaner-burning diesel fuel, made from 100% natural, 100% renewable vegetable sources, its uses in today’s society may surprise you. Below are nine ways Biodiesel is being used. Some of which you may never have realized.

1) Biodiesel Car Rental – Yes that’s right. A Maui and Los Angeles car rental rents cars that run on Biodiesel. These cars get between 400 and 800 miles per tank! Not bad when consider the price of gas these days.

The US Government is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by giving producers of Biodiesel fuel government funds. The tax incentive works to help tax paying customers by lowering the cost of the fuel
bill.

8) Lubrication Additive – Because Biodiesel is a better lubricant than current low-sulfur petroleum, fuel injectors and other types of fuel pumps can rely on Biodiesel fuel for lubrication. With the right additives, engine performance can also be enhanced, making engines last longer. Other numerous applications can also make use of it’s lubricate properties, such as concrete forms and asphalt trucks. Its solvent properties also make it a safe parts cleaner, reducing skin and eye irritation associated with other cleaners.

Why Diesel Fuel Prices Are High

Diesel fuel prices used to be less than gasoline prices. But a lot of people are now wondering why diesel fuel costs higher than gasoline. The primary reason is the increasing global demand. The other factors would be environmental restrictions and higher federal taxes. (All of these will be tackled in detail below. )

What people do not realize is that the pattern shifts. During the summer, people tend to use their vehicles for vacations; this in turn increases the cost of gasoline. During the winter, people tend to stay at home and generate a high demand for heating oil; this in turn increases the cost of diesel fuel. The correlation between heating oil and diesel is that they are similar fuel and that the price of the heating oil tends to set a floor for diesel.

The widening spread between the prices of diesel fuel and gasoline is partly due to the lull in the demand for gasoline, which can be attributed to high prices and soft economy. If people would just increase their consumption as rapidly as before, then the prices of gasoline would be higher. In return, the spread between the prices of diesel fuel and gasoline will not be as wide as it is now.

Increasing Global Demand

There is an increasing demand for diesel fuel worldwide—that is, in the United States, Europe, China, and India. In Europe, more vehicles with diesel engines were sold in the past few years. More than 50 percent of new registrations for 2007 were diesel-consuming vehicles. In India, the same trend applies: the numbers of new vehicles sold have doubled in five years, and 30 percent of which is diesel-powered. This percentage is projected to reach 50 percent by 2010. In China, the increasing demand for diesel fuel is in direct proportion with its economy. With them hosting the Olympics plus the earthquake that hit them recently, higher demand for diesel fuel is foreseen to avoid interruptions and to run heavy equipment and emergency generators.

Environmental Restrictions

The shift to ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel in the United States is an ongoing project since 2006. Its goal is to apply this standard to all on-highway diesel fuel by December 2010. There are also standards for off-highway diesel fuel such as fuel for generators, construction machinery, and marine use. This drastic change is an expensive process altogether as it will target the production of all diesel fuel, which in turn has affected the selling price of diesel fuel. A projection has it that this expensive process would require refiners to invest a large amount of money, and this will make them increase the prices of diesel fuel between 2007 and 2011. Moreover, a production bottleneck will probably result in higher price spikes.

Higher Federal Taxes

The tax for diesel fuel is higher than the tax for gasoline. And naturally, the higher the tax, the higher will be the price at the pump. This has been the trend for several years, and this is the explanation why diesel has sold for an average of 1.3 percent more than gasoline over a specific period of time.

Industrial diesel engines are any engines that are used

diesel engines are used to power a major portion of
industrial machinery, from motorbikes to bulldozers,
generators, and even forklifts and trucks. They range
in size from a few pounds to a few tons, with a various
amount of power.

The use of diesel engines is mandated by several large
organizations. All NATO machinery for example, runs on
either diesel or aviation grade kerosene. At the
current level of technology, fossil fuels, and especially
diesel are the most economical and convenient means
of supplying power to a variety of equipment and
even backup generators.

All industrial diesel engines can be either air cooled
or water cooled. The smallest engines for residential
purposes will typically provide about 10kW and cost
a few thousand USD. These smaller scale engines power
much of the mobile machinery we see around us on a
daily basis, such as trucks, farm equipment, small
boats, stationary process machinery, earth movers,
and so on.

The medium scale industrial diesel engines can provide
levels between a few hundred kW and a few thousand
kW and are sold for prices in usually the thousands
of dollars. These types are used in larger machinery
such as larger mining equipment, oil rigs, trains,
large boats, military equipment, and much more.

The largest of industrial diesel engines provide 10,000
to 80,000 kW, sold in the millions of dollars, and
are used for ultra heavy equipment, electric power
generation, and the largest of ships. Large industrial
engines can be up to 49 feet side and run on low
grade diesels. In places such as China, where there
is a high demand for de-centralized power sources,
these types of engines are often utilized.

Industral engines are classified in terms of their
speed, or RPM (Rotations Per Minute). High RPM
engines are normally used for the lighter, more common
applications, such as trucks and other types of land
equipment.

Medium RPM engines are generally used for power
generation. Low RPM ranges, and high torque engines
are used for the biggest type of equipment, such as
marine equipment and applications.

For the most part, industrial diesel engines can
vary in terms of size and performance. Chances are,
you’ve either seen or used industrial equipment at
some point in time. Although they cost a lot of
money, they are the way to go with bigger equipment

* Solar power, once installed, has little maintenance or further expense. There is no fuel to purchase, since the sun’s energy fuels the system.

* Generators are not so. After installation, a generator will require regular servicing by a professional every 6 months. Generators require fuel – a cost that is constantly increasing. Moving generator parts must be replaced from time to time due to wear and tear.

Convenience is another factor to consider when looking at solar power versus generator power. Solar power is much more convenient than generator power.

* Solar power may be less convenient to purchase and install, since it is not as widely available as generators. This is due to the currently small market for solar power. As the market increases, however, this will be less of a problem. Solar power systems have no moving parts to wear out or need lubrication. Once installed, solar power requires little attention. The user can almost forget it.

* Generators are widely available, so convenient to purchase and install. Convenience decreases after installation, though. A generator must be monitored frequently to be sure sufficient fuel is available. It must be refilled often when used as a regular source of power. Fuel must be ordered and delivery taken – or fuel must be hauled by the owner. The system must be serviced twice a year. This servicing will include filter changes, an oil change, a tune up, and complete inspection of the entire unit. Worn parts must be replaced.

The solar power versus generator battle includes the matter of efficiency, too. Which is more cost-effective? The facts seem to point to solar power.

* Solar power has no emissions when working. There is no pollution involved in fuel production – no greenhouse gases. It is totally clean. Solar power uses a renewable energy source.

* A big drawback to generator use is still the matter of emissions and the environment. Generators are usually run on diesel fuel, and diesel fuel is produced from a fossil fuel. There are emissions in the production of the fuel, and also in its use. Diesel generators are a major source of air pollution and high sulfur levels in North America. Exposure to diesel generator exhaust can lead to health hazards.

For most people, the resolution of the solar power versus generator debate is to install a hybrid system. Using solar power as the main energy source will save money. The fuel is free.
